James Oakes, author of Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861-1865, also criticized the 1619 Project in the same website: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2019/11/18/oake-n18.html …pic.twitter.com/FL5utYv5zO
I don't presume to be able to judge whether these eminent figures are right in their assessment of the 1619 Project -- I'm calling attention to the fact of their criticisms, which appeared in relatively obscure venues.
They have as much standing as any people alive to judge the project which doesn't mean that their judgments are necessarily dispositive in themselves. But they deserve to be considered.

More on McPherson. Here is Ta-Nehisi Coates calling McPherson’s history of the civil war “arguably among the greatest single-volume histories in all of American historiography.”https://twitter.com/wesyang/status/1197764685275320321?s=21 …
Wesley Yang added,
So McPherson responds with some stuff that sounds like a lot of standard white guy talking points. But he’s not a standard white guy — he’s a preeminent historian. So he’s coming at this not with the usual bro science but with a lifetime of scholarship.
Now, it’s true that a great scholar can slip into Bro science mode when he’s triggered by something. Maybe that happened here. Or maybe not. My tweets called attention to the curious fact that TNC’s historian hero just dissed the 1619 project. That’s interesting! That’s news!
Because they aren’t here on Twitter, and I tweeted it, I get to stand in as the messenger that people get to shoot. People acting like I wrote the piece, etc Fine. Whatever. I get it.
Interesting to see replies depict you as "white." Sorry you get to be the guy this week
