We don't play therapist out of the goodness of our hearts. If a friend comes to me with a problem, helping them makes my day better, not worse. If I don't have time I can tell them that. If I don't care because we're not actually friends, I can tell them that too.

If I were to advertise myself as a pro bono Life Experience Expert available for consultations, a clock would start. When it reached zero I would be accused of being a predator - because what other benefit could I possibly get from playing Dear Amy in private correspondence?

I'm not saying Dr. Fabello is a blackmailer. I'm sure the social leverage she gains by amassing gossip is never explicitly deployed in service of some desired result. But you have to be very careful who you entrust your confidence to.

i don't agree with this because in circles of people who have emotional problems stemming from trauma/mental health/etc (thinking of queer circles here), this simply happens because a lot of people who have those problems also have no real concept of emotional boundaries

if you display signs of empathy or emotional "maturity" in these circles, people tend to flock to you on their own. this can cause big problems when the person putting on this air is an egotist who wants to cultivate a personality cult of emotional dependents ->
