Is this actually good? I see people talking about it but it's long and what they say is ambiguous/inconsistent enough that I don't know whether it's worth it.

I think it's uncharitable to read the contradictions in the piece as accidental. The author doesn't think the protag is really oppressed for having narrow shoulders, but he clearly does empathize with the idea of doing everything 'right' and getting nowhere.
