The zeitgeist soured on Aronofsky and Shyamalan but even their misfires, people saw. A movie like The Happening would bomb at the box office and slaughter on a home video release through word of mouth. And The Happening is actually a lot of fun. But how would you find out now?

It feels like the most 'authoritative' sources people have for some idea of The Cinema would tell them the greatest movies ever made are 8 1/2, Breathless, Ikiru... Do you think this will encourage engagement with the arts? Or will it just make people feel stupid?

Criterion is pretty expansive at least. They've got everything from John Woo films to European art stuff to Yankee Doodle Dandy

Their focus is heavily on the Euro art films and a lot of their more mainstream picks are token (cronenberg in, Lynch out) or outright ironic (chasing Amy, Armageddon). It's true there's good stuff in there though.
