I don't fundamentally disagree with the 'fast food' or 'theme park' characterizations Scorsese and Coppola read onto the Marvel films but I do flinch at the high art old guard looking down its nose at audiences too stupid to know better.

Are people edified by Infinity War? Do they learn about the world around them? No. They experience a fleeting reprieve from the paralytic stress of their day-to-day lives, sanctioned by a corporate megalith they did nothing to install. They're not "choosing wrong."

Call me a snob but I can't remember the last time I was emotionally moved by a hollywood film. Maybe Grand Budapest Hotel which was raked as twee by a mass of people who have replaced human connection with being a screeching ball of resentment online. I think the 2 are linked.

Haven't seen GBH but Anderson has always seemed very callous and misanthropic to me.

It was a touching tale of love and humanity told with whimsy and no one however humble does not posses the ability to be extraordinary and embrace the magic of life.

It's really stodgy of me but if I'm on a long flight with 80 movies available I search the international and classic selections because I want to care about the people and their struggles. I'll look in the hollywood stuff but I rarely tempted by anyone punching to save the world

I cared about the protag in Joker, but I'm also not looking to be reminded of the transient beauty of existence by a pedantic aesthete - see for example Ad Astra, anything by Terrence Malick, etc. Get enough of that shit from Twitter.
