Here's what he said: if Twitter users can make fun of his religion at their leisure, he should be free to call gay men faggots. That's true. That's what free speech means. The very essence of it is not having your livelihood threatened by what you believe.

We protect this idea because it can protect us when we hold minority views, and because it can protect minority views when they turn out to be true. It preserves our access to the truth against powerful people who have an interest in falsehood.

But more importantly, it reflects that we think of people as more than a set of checkboxes. It means we recognize that not all Christians are rabid fundies, not all gay men are vicious narcissists, and even those who are those things still have value and should not be discarded.
