Not gonna lie, I kind of do think that the 'Professional Managerial Class' is a deviation from class analysis as Marx and Engels had it. That's a simple enough sentiment, though. Barely fills out a tweet. Hardly enough to expand into a thesis so hefty. https://nplusonemag.com/online-only/online-only/professional-managerial-chasm/ …

In some professions, like medicine, law, or the academy there's clear affiliation: doctors exploit nurses and nurses' assistants; partners exploit the labor of associates, paras, clients' employees; profs exploit adjuncts and students. The biggest outlier seems to be journalism.

Journalists are workers. There's no lumping them in with bosses, and arguments from a kind of "personality capital" from education and connections falls flat for me. In their capacity as writers for hire, their labor is exploited for profit.

However, it also seems that journalism as a trade is increasingly incestuous not just with the state, as became clear in the W years, but with a growing pseudo-aristocracy which with its largely inherited wealth drives wages well below CoL where the jobs are.

It's possible this has always been true, but for a while papers took enough labor to print and information moved slowly enough such that you could make enough money selling one to fund real investigative reporting.

That's no longer the case. Any bozo on Twitter can retweet a press release or VOA article. Publishing one's writing is a hobbyist venture, embarked on at leisure by almost everyone. Citizens break local stories themselves in exchange for a few soundcloud listens.

Which leads you to wonder: who the fuck is making a living doing this shit? My guess is that the answer is "not very many people," especially considering the geographical epicenters of this set: the Bay Area, NYC and DC.

More likely, the income from publishing the majority of 'content' is purely supplemental for its recipient - still basically a hobbyist. The money to survive and build professional contacts in the most expensive cities on Earth isn't likely coming from Gawker or Vice.

This is basically all speculation, though. Obviously large swathes of journalism, now as ever, exist to manufacture consent. Due to the nature of that mission, those journalists set themselves apart from the working class in their role as mouthpieces for the bosses.

This is commonly also true of associates, adjuncts, therapists and marketers, all exploited but highly credentialed and tasked to a greater or lesser extent with the direct preservation of the existing system's legitimacy. These are the groups boosting Warren.

Warren will be good for business. Her administration will condemn all forms of oppression which it does not directly fund, and a few that it does. For four glorious years, the DC segment can angle for access and consultancy gigs. Maybe they'll reeducate a few of the hicks.

Of course, Warren won't serve a single term. She won't win any general election after Trump has had his chance to discredit and defame her. But this too fits the narrative - the American worker cannot be included among the revolutionary subject, and the crisis continues.
