Aya Gruber added,
Looking forward to reading this! I see carceral feminism as one (admittedly dominant) aspect of a more general wave of progressive punitivism.
From a non-US perspective I see it as part of a transnational fetishization of penality legitimated by reference to a higher morality (humanitarianism, human rights, progessive retributivism)
Food for thought, thanks. I do think there's the collective marination in penality as the only option that ihas been quintessentially American and has characterized everyone's experiences across the political spectrum.
Not sure of the extent of this American exceptionalism. An increased resort to penality as a way to solve social issues is sth that characterises progressive thinking also in the UK, Cont Europe, Latin America and at the Intl level (ICL & human rights bodies' coercive duties)/1
If the US may have influenced some countries and contexts, in others (Cont Europe, human rights bodies' jurisprudence) the appeal to penality seems to be indigenous and constructed on appeals to human rights, moral obligations to vindicate victims, etc /2
Victim discourse is a big thing in the U.S. as well. Here's a piece I wrote about this: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3404276 …
I think it's Anglo-American at the narrowest. Canada in particular has its own history in this regard and is often culturally "ahead" of the States on this in spite of a smaller incarcerated population.
