Yeah. In the internet era it seems like there were proto-cults on LJ, there was Shakesville, and a small embattled contingent on Something Awful all well before 2010. It's hard to discern emergence from contagion, but no question Twitter was captured during gamergate.

yeah, gamergate was probably a crystallizing moment for this stuff, you could see the NGOs coming in on the right very clearly, but i wasn't paying enough attention to twitter at the time to see the left side of it. the clickbait privilege theory thing was already underway then
