While it's always encouraging to see more people becoming concerned about climate and the environment, it's hard not to be cynical about the current moment. It's not at all clear that Greta, XR, and the general media blitz are furthering either understanding or action on climate.

What these actors are doing amounts to "turning up the volume" on climate. You can see this in language like "climate crisis", calls for a state of emergency, and a proliferation of apocalyptic narratives on everything from Arctic permafrost to the future of the Amazon.

The thing is, if we lacking for anything it is surely not volume. Simply being more intense, even to the point of hysteria, does not explain what needs to be done or how we're going to accomplish it. It is a "call to action" with no clear conception of what is to be done.
