"Explainable" and "of a common type" are not equivalent. Contemporary Germany is not explainable without understanding the Third Reich, but that does not mean contemporary Germany is a fascist state.

If there's no basis to believe that opposition to white supremacy will produce a politics capable of transforming the world, that's actually a pretty good indication that what's currently determining the course of history is not white supremacy.

Yes, that's true. But what I mean to say is, just because "white supremacy is a real ideology that continues to affect politics today" is not necessarily an idea which is useful in the same way does not necessarily imply that it isn't true.

What lessens is referring to here, as I understand it, is white supremacy as social force (thus the reference to institutional racism) rather than individually held ideology. It primarily affects the branding decisions of ruling class politics and gives way to capital every time
