I sometimes think American politics are just going to balkanize into smaller and more extreme micro-coalitions and I suspect this is inevitable with empires in decline. Our unity was predicated on economic and imperial forward momentum.

The structure of our system which demands two political parties perhaps works against this balkanization, but I think there's two ways to metabolize this: Intense intra-party competition and general election disinterest, and largely politically empty competitions on personality.

Another possibility is quashing all this through transition to an overtly undemocratic government. I think the possibility of military rule in the US in the next 20-30 years (esp if there's major intl conflict) is underrated. It's the highest-pollig public institution, you know.
