They don't have to do that anymore since they started taking casualties. When was the last ground engagement and how long did it last?
I guess if you count air strikes as combat, I would agree that it is more frightening to go to Israeli prison than "fight" Hamas. Israel doesn't tolerate combat casualties because they threaten morale, which creates a whole boatload of internal tensions re the conscripted army.

This? Looks like a lone wolf attack - impossible to tell if the guy even hit the soldiers or if the two squads they sent got each other.
