Many of the people whom I assumed years ago were ending their prospects in the field through sociopathic online behavior have shot up through the ranks of journalism. Any reason to believe this won’t happen in academia?

If you're socially astute enough to manage a career in academia notwithstanding the internet... It won't hurt your prospects. You just have to know how to pick targets.
