no it was always part of the background discourse since it's noted that thom yorke hates it and so everyone else hates it, even the large section of people that vocally hate radiohead for reasons largely related to other people liking the band
The rationale of "the character is genuinely creepy" is weak. The entire reason the song got popular is that it's easy to see your own worst impulses in it, see also Behind Blue Eyes
