Quintessential Saw experience is a false wall suddenly opening in a room you've seen people get tortured in and a forgettable character from a previous entry that you've seen for maybe 3 minutes tops in the film you're watching stepping into view as music swells uncontrollably

Whenever I've watched a saw film I've watched at least two from beforehand and it's still difficult to follow. While most horror franchises ignore and cherrypick details from previous entries Saw films expected you to spend the year between each release revising for the next one

There are 8 Saw films. Jigsaw is in all of them for a significant amount of the run time. Jigsaw dies at the start of Saw 3. There is no supernatural element to the Saw series. It's total God Mode franchise nonsense from the third entry on, I love it so much

These movies are better than people give them credit for. Not only do they, immediately following the first movie, careen directly into latter-era Nightmare on Elm St self-aware camp, they also nimbly parody and dissect a certain kind of sadistic reactionary outlook

People might not realize just how insane Americans were circa 2004. A not-insignificant segment of the population openly supported use of torture. "Tough on crime" was THE position of legislatures and the media; barely a murmur had been heard of the "prison industrial complex"
