Marx unravels from the commodity a whole logical relationship between parts of the capitalist system but never intends the bourgeois/proletarian divide to neatly explain all historical processes and spends a great deal of time worrying about middle forces and confounding factors.

If class struggle were just "haves" versus "have-nots" then there would be no explanation for it to have ever emerged and then persisted over long periods of time across many cultures.

This is all fine but the identity and eco-green signifiers contemporary leftists are obsessed with add very little to a genuinely rigorous class analysis beyond mystification. They're less complements to Marxism than competitor ideologies.
