Arabic has a massive vocabulary. Something like three times that of English. Cognates are virtually nonexistent. It has at least five distinct dialects, but students typically start with a generic pseudoclassical media version that is never used in conversation.
The Arabic claim is really galling. I think the number of non-Arabs I've met who I'd describe as "being able to speak Arabic," I can count on one hand.
