I refuse to believe "communism is free time and nothing else". The manifest failure of bourgeois society is that "those of its members who work, acquire nothing, and those who acquire anything do not work." To assume what comes after is "post-work" is a truly bourgeois fantasy.

To say that communism will abolish work (in any sense beyond abolishing the wage) is to say that the bourgeois class position will be generalized, and indeed it has long been the fantasy of bourgeois economists. Rather we should say: "labor shall become life's prime want"!

Fwiw the 'mere' abolition of the wage seems to me to be precisely what jehu supports. It's a shame he isn't on here to respond directly but I'm sure anyone who's interested can imagine the broad outlines of his response.

My main draw to post-work, for what it's worth, isn't the promise of a life without toil. It's the power of imagining a world where my survival doesn't depend on exerting the maximum effort to deprive someone else.
