So many trendy design activities are like "How might we…avoid having a difficult conversation about our objectives?"

Would folks be willing to send me some of their conference CFP / "Call For Proposals" summaries for talks that were accepted? Want to collect a couple dozen into a blog post for folks who are looking for examples of accepted proposals to help them write their first

No amount of collaboration workshops can help an overloaded team made up of members who are appraised on individual performance.

I like the idea of a monorepo but how does that work with continuous delivery if there are multiple services and only one or some need to be redeployed? Versioning each component? So if the version didn't change, no deploy?

Not only does the Anna Karenina principle (happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way) not apply to tech teams, but if anything, the opposite is true. Teams tend to fail in a few predictable ways, but there are many paths to success.

"'Keeping [software] running' post-launch should not be the goal. Your software launch is an opportunity to start getting feedback from users and making improvements based on what you learn. In other words, it is a starting point."

On my team, every team member eventually leads a project, no matter how junior (or senior) they are. This is the project lead expectations guide I share with them, outlining guidance on the role, and expectations that come with it:

If women aren't represented in engineering & CS in this era of , big data & Internet of Things, the world will continue to be made by men for men. "Women should have a place at the table [and] a hand in designing that table, making it and shaping it."

"While empathy may be important (and the jury is still out as to whether vicarious empathy (developed second-hand)... actually creates better designs, it may not be the most important thing for product teams to focus on.”

"a few studies indicate that technical solutions [...] *may* have *some* impact on an engineering team’s work quality. [But] volumes and volumes of studies show that sleep, workload, and stress have dramatic impacts on performance." -

Me most days: - Why? - Tell me your hypothesis - I don’t understand. Please explain. - What’s the actionable outcome? - What’s first? - What’s the trade offs? - How can we help? - Was I too direct? - How’s the team’s morale? - This might be cool, but a distraction

Trigger warning for anyone who has ever received tough feedback! Recently, I gave a founder some feedback and they went into fight or flight. So I thought about how to reduce the emotional bandwidth required by tough feedback using the principles of data compression. Thread!

A long time ago— like 15 years ago— I worked at Sun Microsystems. The company was nearly dead at the time (it died a couple years later) because they didn't make anything that anyone wanted to buy anymore. So they had a lot of strange ideas about how they'd make their comeback.

quick mental checklist when chatting w/a team. One observation ... I take for such granted that is an integral part of the picture that I just include that in #2, and just assume they'll be a partner in continuous improvement efforts.
