I left Google DeepMind to build a non-profit research lab focused on helping to fix climate change ASAP. Very open and collaborative. Everything open-source. Focus on practical, scalable interventions, starting with forecasting solar PV.

I'll be giving a tutorial on deep learning at the AI & ML for the Smart Grid conference, 28-30th April, Brussels; organised by . Very early bird prices expire on Feb 28th, and you can save 10% using the discount code AIM-20-SPKCOL.

If you love open source Python, and have a little time on your hands, please consider helping to add a backend to - it'll help out loads of projects, and it's bleeding-edge stuff :) The Xarray devs can give friendly pointers!

I guess it's good news that people are interested in insulation. Insulation isn't sexy but it can have a large (and lasting) impact on your personal carbon footprint. It's just a shame it's so hard to scale across millions of homes!

Checking web stats for my blog & I'm surprised to see that the most popular page is still my 10 year old post on insulating our Victorian house, followed by my electricity dataset. (Not my more recent ramblings about open science for climate mitigation) (Stats for last 12 mnths)

Really enjoying making simple little computer games in with my 8 year old daughter and 5 year old son. They're building games (with plenty of help!) that they get genuinely excited by and want to play, then tweak, then play some more, tweak again, etc.

Great intervention from Ofgem's new CEO and delighted (and relieved) to see innovation, flexibility and heat being prioritised in Ofgem's decarbonisation plan. Tech-led flexibility must be at the heart of the energy transition.

To store a few TBytes of timeseries data, should we use PostgreSQL with automatically partitioned tables? We need to write complex SQL queries, and we'll be adding about 5 million rows per day. IIUC, partitioning large tables speeds up SELECT and INSERT. Is that right?!

Some early jet engines used a similar approach to what I'm proposing. Those old "motor jets" used a piston engine to drive the compressor:

To reduce CO2 emissions from aviation, could we build hybrid jet engines? Get rid of the turbine. Drive the compressor by an electric motor (powered by batteries & PV). Because there's no turbine, combust the fuel as hot as you like, to maximise efficiency. Would that work?!

Last week, the lovely folk at National Grid showed me around their amazing underground tunnels. Lots of pics of the trip over on my Insta, but for you Twitter - the One True Kingdom of the nerds - I've got something much more exciting. BECAUSE THEY ALSO SHOWED ME THEIR DATA.

Steelmaking is responsible for almost 10% of global CO2 emissions and was long thought to be one of the last bastions of fossil fuels with no viable alternatives.
