Not trying to start an argument, just floating an idea as this college dropout works on a little project. Like many things in life, "it's complicated".

*and the fact that most universities are for-profit corps, which is in total contrast to virtually every university in Europe for example

Yep, another trend that has to be part of the issue.

NCAA sports plays a strong role, as does spending tens of millions of dollars on student housing and 'fun stuff' like this: https://today.ttu.edu/posts/2015/06/leisure-pool-ranked-one-of-nations-best … It's an arms race to have the biggest and best, most ostentatious facilities for students.
-
Certainly part of the complex issue.

It’s counter intuitive but the reason that universities became too expensive is because everyone “needs to go to college” and everyone can take student loans without collateral. Near constant demand + Unlimited subsidized financing by Uncle Sam = No equilibrium price.
-
yeah, the "everyone needs a degree" story is def. part of the problem.

This has been well researched and a common complaint from the right (at least in the US) is it’s the fault of “too many admins” when it fact it’s been less public money going into higher education over the last decades. Leaving the burden on students who need loans to pay for it
-
The "too many admins" complaint is one I've heard from the far left, the old professors, more than from the right. And they've watched it grow over the decades.

California State University system published a study of employment between 1973 and 2008. There were 11,614 full-time faculty in 1973, and 12,019 in 2008. There were 3,800 full-time administrators in 1973, and 12,183 in 2008. 3X growth! In other words, you’re on to something.

What is also overlooked is the shift towards using part time adjunct professors for the majority of classes. Adjunct professors have no benefits and zero job security.
