Get rid of the damn bots/spam accounts for the love of God.
-
Yes, I second that! Why does Twitter allow accounts flagged as “suspected spam accounts” (by Twitter themselves!) to remain active for years?https://twitter.com/geoffgolberg/status/979133159811047425?s=21 …

Add: —Messaging view for threads where people I reply to have started talking with one another —Let me get notified when people I reply to a lot start talking to one another
-
Redesign: —It's hard to be fast and loose with tweets when each one of them competes for likes/success theatre —It takes way too many taps to take a tweet to DMs (esp. on mobile)
-
Why take a tweet to DM vs chat publicly?
-
—Academically: our personas backstage or sidestage often allow much more open expression vs. on the main stage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dramaturgy_(sociology) …
-
—Anecdotally: Many cases come to mind. Top for me: you want to reply to people privately/exclusively (like friends at Tinder today on the FB news), you want to discuss someone's tweets without them present, or you do not want the conversation to expand past the current group
-
—And the IG case, you want to send something to buds who have an inside joke / idiomatic relationship with it. It's like tagging usernames in the comments vs. sending it to DMs

Verify real human beings and get rid of the bots. (I’ve been on here for 8 years, use my real name and pic, and have applied for verification 3 times WITHOUT SUCCESS. I have 100K+ followers, very few of whom are bots.)
-
for srs how does this woman not have a check mark
-
good question! someone remedy this!
-
If we can give verifications to “real people” why can’t we give verification to “real bots”
-
I think it has to do with the verification process which is preventative of this.

Here are 3 suggestions: 1. Wipe out the bots 2. Suspend accounts that are verbally abusive or threatening (including
@realDonaldTrump) 3. Apologize for your role in enabling manipulation of the news & information environment in the 2016 election so we can better trust Twitter - 1 more reply

Honestly, I suspect longer tweets and celebrity focused environments work against this stuff. Possibly even algo timelines. When Moveable Type emphasized length and performance it caused people to optimize for audiences and less chat.
-
Possibly you could emphasize friendships within the system more? Let you mark people as close friends or something so you always see what they’re up to? Prioritizing the stuff that’s more likes etc also limits how much people see idle chat
-
A personal feeling I’ve had is that a number of my close friends have left Twitter for various reasons over the years. Most have stuck around but some headed off. That has made the whole place feel less chatty and friendly. I think part of that is purely cultural...
-
... ie. Is someone’s everyday experience of twitter friendly and pleasant and fun, or stressy or confrontational or aggressive. Getting back people’s friends - trying to get a greater proportion of any group back on Twitter - would probably help that a lot.
-
I suspect, but don’t know, that Facebook has more social density. In any given real-life group of people, a larger percentage are regular users. That probably makes it feel more local, chatty and social, rather than a place you interact with celebrities. Could be a balance there.
-
One random thing I’ve rather liked recently - there’s this rather lovely bot called
@smashhitsbot which gets people to do impromptu little interviews. It’s very nice. Could you do something like that to inspire discussion between friends? -
haha this is my bot. Happy to talk about it
