omfg @jack thinks that black people tweeting #onhere means something like a status indicator of being online. That's not it. @jayrosen_nyu @pkafka can you tell him to talk to one black person to find out what it actually means?pic.twitter.com/4lzrZhintl

I know it has to do with experience seen and felt. Didn’t mean to associate that directly with presence, but referring to the resulting live and vibrant chat I see around it. We want to be better at showing who’s up to discuss.

That is directly opposed to why the hashtag exists. A presence indicator of "who's up to discuss" blurs the line between #onhere and irl and the whole point of the hashtag is that they're separate and maybe they should be. .

Tangent: It's not sitting well that you want to laud the things that Black Twitter is doing just after you fought your team to keep virulent racists on the platform. You want to big up what we do so you can productize it, but not keep those who seek to harm us away? That's gross.

You know me, and you know that’s not who I am. I didn’t fight my team or override any decisions if you’re referring to the article saying I did.

I do know you and was surprised and dismayed to hear/read that you fought to keep He Who Must Not Be Named on the platform. I'm glad to learn that that isn't what happened & would be interested in learning the real story there, which I don't think has been communicated anywhere.

We had a bunch of tweets from folks like @Vijaya refuting. It’s important we follow our rules consistently, and we did. My job is to ask clarifying questions along the way, and that’s what I did.

@jack you’re honestly probably better off not responding to these if they aren’t viral. It doesn’t show up on anyone’s newsfeed until you reply to it.

To begin with what means "black people" ? Do you take "black people" as a whole ? This is so wrong , totally inaccurate . I come from #africa we dont use it or sure we count for nothing on here 🙄 and yes Africa is not a country and each has his own history and twitter habits

Also, I like that term.. "Black Twitter"... Like a twitterized segregation. Shame we don't have a twitter for every colour! I'd be all for a "Purpley Twitter" or a "Cerulean Twitter" #100percent
