We believe many people use Twitter as a digital public square. They gather from all around the world to see what’s happening, and have a conversation about what they see.

What our algorithms decide to show in shared spaces, like search results, is based on thousands of signals that constantly learn and evolve over time. Some of those signals are engagement, some are the number of abuse reports. We balance all of these to prevent gaming our system.

We acknowledge the growing concern people have of the power held by companies like Twitter. We believe it’s dangerous to ask Twitter to regulate opinions or be the arbiter of truth. We’d rather be judged by the impartiality of outcomes, and criticized when we fail this principle.

In closing, when I think of our work, I think of my mom and dad in St. Louis, a Democrat and a Republican. We had lots of frustrating and heated debates, but looking back, I appreciate I was able to hear and challenge different perspectives. And I appreciate I felt safe to do so.

We believe Twitter helps people connect to something bigger than themselves, shows all the amazing things happening in the world, and all the things we need to acknowledge and address. We‘re constantly learning how to make it freer and healthier for all to participate. Thank you.

I think this is exactly right — free speech doesn’t mean free reach. Following this logic, why can’t the original poster can’t block replies, either selectively or wholesale? The people replying are reaching the audience that the OP earned.

Some thoughts on thishttps://twitter.com/djpardis/status/985309928863576064 …
-
On 1. People don’t have to curate if they don’t want to (default, as today). Also people should be able to close to all replies. On 2. No doubt that people will sometimes use this to shut off conversation prematurely, but presumably they feel it is better than alternative.

I understand this. However, this is a fundamental change to Twitter creating a new product that might not enjoy the same network effects as the current product due to its less social nature.
-
Fear of changing the product should be an honorary Twitter core value.
@jco used to say “we don’t know why we are successful so we are afraid any change will ruin it” (paraphrasing). Understandable but not exactly commendable. -
Going to reference another conversation we've had before: https://twitter.com/djpardis/status/939938322004164608 … I appreciate that level of caution from
@jco! You need to understand what makes Twitter Twitter. Big or small updates fundamentally change Twitter and can adversely affect network health/growth. -
People talk about fast ship times. You don't need fast ship times for a product which achieved PMF. You can take your time to understand why it works then capitalize on it.

If your responsibility is to make sure people see your tweets, then

That’s funny, because yesterday I made a negative comment on a Reuters story about Monsanto, and after that I couldn’t see the others’ replies. And today I can’t see the replies to tweets of other accounts I follow either. Your algorithms suck.

That’s called retweeting. That’s the amplifier.

@TwitterSupport Can this bit “We do not have a responsibility, nor you a right, to amplify your tweets to audiences that don’t follow you” be clarified? Would this mean a retweet of Y’s tweet by X could be hidden from X’s followers who don’t follow Y?https://twitter.com/jack/status/1037399215226474496?s=21 … -

And yet you fill all of our timelines with promoted garbage from people and companies completely not relevant to our usage. Example: why do I get Spanish and Arabic promoted posts? Come on.

So we won't see any more promoted tweets or trends anymore then?
