Can people just take the time to realize the number of technical limitations that @Square overcame to make this possible.
This is amazing re-engineering: to turn a basic hardware component into a powerful component in a payment platform.
THIS is the definition of innovation.

I’m genuinely interested in why this seems innovative. 1. Data over headphone jack has been standard since the 1980s (C64, Spectrum, etc) & lots of 00s-era devices did this. 2. Competitors work wirelessly (Bluetooth) and accept Apple Pay, Contactless & chip, not old mag stripe.
-
Yeah, we do that too.

I'm not just referring to data transport through headphone jacks. Technically, there are many constraints when using this method, especially with ensuring accuracy, security and reliability. For a company to use headphone jacks for financial transactions is bold and innovative.
-
Although mag strips for banking is slowly being deprecated, it will take a long time to transition fully over to Apple + Google pay, chip, or other NFC.
-
Either way, I still think the overcoming of technical challenges and the flow of new + bold ideas should be recognized.

credit card strips are magnetic audio tape that's why a headphone jack can hear them and they're so easy to copy

A lot of people use a laptop as a POS machine but require expensive accessories or manual entry for card scanning
