Appreciate the conversation today. This reflects a lot of our thinking. We’ve changed Twitter a lot over time, but one thing we haven’t touched is what the service implicitly incentivizes people to do. That’s the level we need to reconsider.https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1029836904169201672 …

You need 2 touch upon consistency. Not different rules for diff. people. TBH, I don’t see why you bend backwards for Jones, he clearly has always violated your rules & Trump threatened to annihilate a country. Why no action on that tweet? You know if anyone else there would be 1/pic.twitter.com/XpBwV2wDxb

Also @Twitter is notorious at suspending & punishing the wrong accounts. Your algos need work. There is a diff. between inciting & indoctrination [Jones] & people being open about their personal struggles as to try to comfort, help or support others. The MH comm. gets failed /2

by others, healthcare system, you don’t need to fail it to. I have seen far too many users complain about being put in Twitter jail over being honest. Supporting each other is way diff. from encouraging idealization or self harm. Don’t you see how damaging this is, you are /3

essentially punishing them with their past & revictimizing them. You are taking away their support group and their opportunity to support others. The mental health comm. is amazing, they are the sweetest, most real, most caring. They are trying to help each other. There is a /4

diff. between inciting others [Jones] & someone opening up about their struggle with idealization, self harm eating disorders or mental health as to try to get support or support others. The context is what matters not just an algo. Jones’ context is always harm & a liability.

Certainly that’s a good idea. But, you know, you could also just *ban people who engage in sustained harassment of bereaved parents*. There is an extent to which you’re just over-thinking this. It isn’t partisan to ban people who attack bereaved parents.

Here’s what I don’t understand. You talk about rebuilding in the increntives in Twitter to encourage the right kind of conversations. This is *completely right* and exactly what people have been asking you for. I have suggestions and thoughts on this.

The way twitter functions at the moment is the consequence of choices and already incentivizes certain types of conversations. We want you to be thoughtful about this stuff and take ownership of it.

But you’ve always argued that this *isn’t* what Twitter should be doing, because somehow Twitter should be neutral and not encourage some kinds of conversations over others.

It’s precisely this like of position that’s led you to not being able to ban someone who harassed bereaved parents, despite it being self-evidently the right and moral thing to do!

So, you know, if it’s okay to make serious intelligent choices about what kinds of incentives and conversations you want on Twitter, *why can’t you do the same thing about Jones*?! Why can’t you take ownership of that? It doesn’t make any sense.

Please, this current situation *makes absolutely no sense* except as a way to placate people on the right who seem to argue that harassment, discrimination and hate speech should remain on the platform. You have to make a choice here. There is no other way.

This is pretty frightening. People aren't using the service to be incentivized, they're using it for communication. What you're describing is Orwellian social engineering. No wonder you went on Hannity.

As one of the few guy who looked into one of the few larger platforms with bigger problems (and fixed those): “incentives” might not be as deliberate initially but it’s not a bad way to think how fix Twitter, which has a lot of numbered scores associated to a tweet.

Those numbers drive some form of performance that isn’t always toxic; removing it, looking into subtle and counter-intuitive narratives, like people enjoying becoming a scape-goat of people they dislike, etc. all that could be relevant. “Thinking” could mean décide to hide it.

You have two choices. 1) embrace mob mentality 2) embrace individuality One of these choices will ensure this platform to live long and prosper. The other will ensure it is forgotten to the history books.
