honestly just change SOMETHING at this point LITERALLY ANY CHANGE IS ENOUGH. Stop being scared of your user base and just do something, anythinghttps://twitter.com/jack/status/1020767835667120128 …

Sure, we saw 280 and a few other things but can we do more? Audiences? Lists? Business Twitter? Those changes were fine, but not that bold. Lots of region locked news stuff, but has largely remained the same since user feedback used to push it forward, and I miss that.

All I'm saying is I know how much crazy stuff is built internally and dies at the hand of ambivalence. 10,000 character attachments being an example that's public; so where's the Twitter The Service vision?
-
It’s easy to demand changebut I see very few actual proposals. Editing tweets is in fact the only one I’ve seen, and it’s incredibly dumb. Someone could edit a 50k-liked tweet to say something terrible.
-
I can think of hundreds without even bringing up editing tweets, which should also happen but isn't necessary
-
Like what?

IDK, how about letting me share a tweet with my friends, on a specific list, instead of the entire world? Or disabling replies to a thread like this one?
-
Interesting. 1 - Sorta FBish. Wonder how such a tweet will appear on my timeline (maybe a tag to qualify *public vs *shared with me and 120 others). 2 - fair ask for standalone tweets(announcements).
@jack -
2 - this thread is not a good example as you are directly referencing an ongoing conversation. Not fair to expect to have the last word.

In Jack and the Twitter team's defense, they pushed through a ranked timeline and longer tweets in the face of steep criticism. These tough decisions resulted in a better experience for many users and improved metrics.

I do agree with you here - despite the haters the algorithm here has been a net positive that makes me use this thing more

Do you think shadow banning is an ethical method to silence people? And do you think it is okay to only censor right-wing accounts, that never violated any rules, based on guilt by association?

I think people need to remember historically town squares run the gamut. Removing hate and violence is one thing. Removing yelling, insults and cursing never helped the oppressed when King GeorgeIII did it, or Mississippi did it to the “rude/offensive/uncivil minorities”... etc.
-
Angry uncomfortable town squares w/mobs & seething anger are the essence, founding & advancement of America. There has always been angry violent evil mobs too... but town squares at some point have to judge the ethics of the anger... of each argument. Rudeness is not violence.
