A few thoughts on @maggieNYT’s article on Twitter. A lot of fair critiques within.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/20/sunday-review/maggie-haberman-twitter-donald-trump.html …

Powerful, but only if we help organize and not overwhelm people: ”And it is democratic—everyone gets to have a voice, whether they work for a local paper, a small TV station or one of the biggest newspapers in the world, or are not in the media business at all.”

”The downside is that everyone is treated as equally expert on various topics.” One of the biggest areas I believe we can help. Helping to determine credible voices per topic in real-time is extremely challenging, but believe it’s possible. Mix of algos and network.

“There is an important discussion about journalism that must take place, including about how all of us performed during the 2016 campaign, but Twitter is not where a nuanced or thoughtful discussion can happen.” This is what we’d like to fix the most.

Fundamentally, we need to focus more on the conversational dynamics within Twitter. We haven’t paid enough consistent attention here. Better organization, more context, helping to identify credibility, ease of use. Challenging work and would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Allow me to manage replies to my Tweets. I don't want to delete other people's Tweets, but hide/unhook them so they can't abuse my Tweets to reach my followers. This enables me to create a healthier environment for productive conversations.https://twitter.com/jack/status/1020767824006938624?s=19 …

Journalists should be transparent about their agenda and stop portraying themselves as clergy or “natural scientists”... Journalists like
@maggieNYT are the sceptic center of the problem. NOT the impartial drone viewers of the situation. They are the actors to be judged. -
Why do you think people need edited content from twitter? They get that from cable TV and mass press. This WAS precisely the vindication of the purest medium, in contrast the the “media” who are an end per se.
-
What is the need for Twitter if Twitter is just a perpetuation of CNN and the NYT? Do you really want a conversation? Cause Twitter actually works like TV nowadays. On a one way stream. You have edited the actual interaction for the sake of “ranking” content.
-
And just like any other central planning pretension in history, it just fucks everything up.
#FreeTwitter I’ll tell you what. Sell a subscription for the unaltered version of Twitter. And let the edited version be the “free” one, since it’s the one you get paid for. - 1 more reply

If conservatives can freely speak w/o constantly being harassed, reported, and suspended 4 using words like “idiot” while the other sides screams profanity, maybe we can have dialogue. I mean, without us, twitter is just one way ‘talking to the wall’ echo chamber.

Don't they prefer it that way though (ie The View)?

Let’s hope not!

Make the feed reverse-chronological (or at least closer to being so) & stop showing things ppl one follows just "liked." Too much clutter.

Haberman doesn't appear to want "more conversation," Haberman wants Twitter to only show her the things that she wants to see.

With
@twitter we know it’s bite sized - 140/280 char. To increase “convo” no more “words” are needed. Instead have expressions per tweet / topic / hashtag with a swift, non-verbal mechanic. The big twist - then show macro & human readable insights. See http://consent.ioThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Your primary job is to listen to your users. You do not fucking listen. Look at you, howling into the void whilst every response contradicts your thoughts. Fucking listen.

So you are responding to Haberman’s whiny criticisms of Twitter because she doesn’t like being called out as a trump enabler & shitty access “journalist,” yet you allow bots & white supremacists to proliferate?
