A birdy & traity thread... What can morphological form tell us, if anything, about ecological function? Our paper out today in asks this question from the perspective of ecological niches and convergent adaptation of bird traits. 1/17

Combining intraspecific trait variation and multidimensional trait hypervolumes can provide some surprising insights in invader-community trait overlap dynamics. Read our new paper in Oikos:

Very nice clear review by and on when reinforcement should (and should not) be expected to lead to species proliferation.

Doing the splits: Nice write-up of recent paper exploring 'shore lark' systematics. Of interest to UK birders: Four species, but North American and north Palaearctic races lumped as 'Common Horned Lark' according to this assessment. tl;dr - species-ing is hard

I mean most birds are at least socially monogamous, and quite a few sing male-female duets, but titi couples hold onto each other and twine their tails when they sing, so that pretty much wins it. Great things to watch in Amazonia.

Nicely written long-term study on male-female bonding in highly monogamous titi monkeys. Probably the cutest couples in the animal kingdom.

Something to think about in HE and academic institutions: benefits of 'neurodiversity' should be recognised, openly discussed, and neurodiverse people welcomed

This is so cool; biomechanical study of how adjacent feathers maintain integrity in flight: a must-add for ornithology lectures. Contains the unforgettable phrase "a feathered biohybrid aerial robot" and also shows how owls can fly silently
