Thread/ Carbon offsets are quantified, tradable units of carbon abatement created by specific projects. They work by compensating for reduction or storage of GHGs and creating a financial burden for emitters. The overall goal is to reduce emissions over time, tightening the GHG limit and raising the cost of offsets at the same time.pic.twitter.com/VWgqSa9i03

But offsets fall short in a lot of ways, as Emily writes in her blog post. In CA, for example, only 18% of claimed GHG emission reductions have materialized.https://news.berkeley.edu/2019/05/07/new-paper-states-cap-and-trade-program-is-falling-short-of-goals/ …
And offsets in ag projects face additional challenges. Costs associated with soil C quantification and verification (MRV), history of unstable carbon markets, and lack of comprehensive policy all undermine farmers’ trust in these markets or opportunities.pic.twitter.com/4vEv3kYcgm
Its no surprise that only 3 compliance systems have consistently utilized agricultural offsets: CA (rice cultivation), Alberta (conservation tillage), + Australia (formerly w/ a C tax that could be offset with agriculture).pic.twitter.com/dDkPXmoe8R

So where does that leave us?
Emitters aren’t incentivized to purchase effective agricultural offsets
Farmers don't receive adequate payments (if any at all)
Regulatory regimes aren't changing fast enough to account for shifts in the agricultural carbon-storage landscape
