Delayed 2nd dose was a good idea-squashed too quickly. Historic crisis demanded less rigidity. Just latest example. Imagine another 50M with 1-dose right now... Grateful to those who floated this early: @VirusesImmunity @zeynep @michaelmina_lab @ashishkjha @Bob_Wachter

This is a really important point. I suspect many think a vaccine may not work after a delayed 2nd dose. In all likelihood, a delayed second dose would offer *better* protection. The question is the level of protection during the 1-2m delay. 1/ https://twitter.com/florian_krammer/status/1345810407898935296 …

More adding support for delayed 2nd dose strategy. @mtosterholm + @mlipsitch are supportive. Early calls to consider this (notably op-ed by @michaelmina_lab + @zeynep in mid-Dec) were too quickly dismissed by some, IMO. It's a race against new variants. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/02/experts-tout-delaying-2nd-covid-vaccine-dose-us-deaths-mount …

(also, more evidence that delayed second dose idea had a lot of merit. Was upsetting to see it so quickly dismissed...) https://twitter.com/Atul_Gawande/status/1349911505991573504 …

This is a data-driven argument for giving single dose of vaccine as means to quicker herd immunity (coming back to 2nd dose later) Exact type of creative thinking we need to get us out of this pandemic more quickly. @michaelmina_lab and @zeynep https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/18/opinion/coronavirus-vaccine-doses.html …

More on the costs of rigidity during a crisis. @ezrakleinhttps://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/01/opinion/covid-vaccine.html …

I'd add one more to the @ezraklein piece on rigidity - failure to acknowledge airborne. On Feb 9 *2020* wrote about likelihood of airborne and therefore need for higher ventilation/filtration. But *debate* over whether happening or how much slowed down implementation.

we didn't know then what % of transmission airborne, but even if 5%, increase in ventilation was key to address superspreading. (our estimate for far-field airborne, where ventilation has most impact, is ~40-50%...) Again, rigidity. Failure to act early was costly.
