I'm quoted alongside @linseymarr in this piece by @RoniNYTimes, and Dr. Marr nailed key problem: --> Americans could not be expected to follow all the latest science, and so many simply rely on what is open or closed as an indicator of what is safe.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/05/health/coronavirus-restaurant-dining-masks.html?smid=tw-share …

        I'm mostly worried about restaurant workers. One-way mask protection...need #bettermaskshttps://twitter.com/j_g_allen/status/1359474386772852738?s=20 …

RESTAURANT WORKERS. You are in a situation where you don't get the benefit of respiratory particles traveling through two masks, so make sure *your* mask is a high-efficiency mask. See my 'cheat sheet'👇 https://twitter.com/j_g_allen/status/1354553833775632384 …

Yes! That’s what I’ve been saying here in Indiana. We have plenty of science deniers who only care about their “freedom”, but there’s another faction of people dining out, going bowling, etc because they trust that it must be safe if the government is allowing it to be open.

tbf "the restaurants are open but don't go" would be a strange position for the government to take... politicians undermining their public health departments at every step.

So condescending. Individual risk varies tremendously wrt COVID. Personal risk tolerance varies as well. govt open/closure policies have been inconsistent across jurisdictions (& at times at odds with WHO/CDC guidelines). Who knows what signal individuals receive as a result.

This study is worthless. We should not give the public the impression this is how scientific reasoning works. I agree staff risk is a real concern that policy should be responsive to (regardless of whether on-site dining is happening).https://twitter.com/WesPegden/status/1367880658991919105 …

I love that we're still doing simplistic ecological studies on mitigations. The latest from @CDCgov even finds that restaurant openings increase *past* "case growth"! Maybe if we close enough outdoor dining, all the past COVID cases will disappear too? https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7010e3.htm?s_cid=mm7010e3_w#T2_down … pic.twitter.com/1oCwlmHIhZ

Reminds me of this one from Sept... And agree - used it as opp to remind folks of underlying factors that are relevant (indoors, no mask, low/no ventilation), and restaurant workers are only getting one-way protection (1 mask)https://twitter.com/j_g_allen/status/1304546227330125827 …

This is making the rounds but has *serious* limitations (residual confounding, exp misclass, selection+info bias) A very weak study and has me wondering why so many are sharing Maybe bc it supports what we’ve already known? time indoors+no mask+low vent = higher risk https://twitter.com/ScottGottliebMD/status/1304271758774722561 …
