There are clearly lots of impressive previous self-play results. Though I would argue that skills (such as versatile tool use) emerging in physical environments might turn out to be of particular relevance to humans.

right - I guess my point is that a stone is Go is also a tool. And going through a specific pattern of moves in Chess can be thought of as 'building a tool' and using it. So I have a hard time seeing the difference, apart from the 'wow' effect that comes with the amazing visuals.
