This bears repeating: PhDs who end up working outside the academy (for whatever reason) are not failures. The academy has no monopoly on great and important work. There are great success to be had in other sectors. Enough already with the professional elitism.

When you're doing something like a PhD, it's easy not to realise how much you're developing (it's difficult to see & feel progress as it's happening). Every now and then, pause for a moment & reflect on how you were a few years back. It's amazing how far you've come.

When you start a you are learning how to do research. You don't know how to do it so ask questions. Lots of questions. If you already knew how to do a PhD there wouldn't be any point in doing it. You are doing it to learn.

Same here: “You are too pretty to do a PhD. Why don’t you try something else?” Me: stupid smile. He has not even checked my CV. That’s the moment I started to build resilience. Later, I’m a PI at . Not a bad outcome for just a pretty face.

When you're doing a you are learning how to do research. Which means it's OK not to know stuff and it's OK to ask lots of questions. Put up your L sign and start learning.

Academic life is often full of frustrations, rejections, poor practice and unfair outcomes. But it is also sometimes the most amazing job in the world, where, if you’re lucky, persistent, kind, and supportive, good things happen.

A todos los que decías que la crisis se ha acabado y que España va bien. Sigo teniendo que tramitar bajas de alumnos del máster porque les deniegan la beca y no pueden pagarse la matrícula... y no imaginais el mal cuerpo que se te queda.

A Nature paper reports stress can cause hair to turn grey in rodents by triggering the depletion of pigment-forming stem cells in hair follicles. This effect seems to be driven by activation of the sympathetic nervous system, contrary to previous theories.

My first first author paper was accepted!!!! It also happens to be my first EVER paper... Despite the fact that I’ve been sciencing since 2011! Experiments fail. Projects get dropped. Labs get scooped. Shit happens. It DOES NOT make you a bad scientist.
