Most (all?) of the things that can be done by blockchain can be done better and cheaper by something else - git, zookeeper, backup, etc. The headline use of blockchain has of course failed in its stated goals, although it is a funky pyramid scheme with a huge carbon footprint.

If you were a Tech Lead, provide team member references. Label yourself as ‘Tech Lead’ and have no recommendations or input from your ex-team as the lead, then did you actually lead? Leaders teach, mentor and progress their team with positive outcomes, not just build and leave.

Most important thing that helps me when giving conference talks: always have a cup of tea at the ready and then it becomes sort of just a ‘chat’ with the audience!

Regular reminder: “it’s idiomatic” is not a valid argument for your chosen language. Base your arguments on facts, language-agnostic principles and solid reasoning. “This is just how it’s done” should not be accepted by development teams; be careful not to use it.

Developers take small breaks to figure out a problem they’ve been stuck on for hours. Often 5 minutes away from the screen is enough. Today is the day that you need to accept: a good portion of the important parts of your software was built on the toilet! 🚽

Everyone says to read the Rust book but honestly I hate reading books to learn languages. The best way to learn is to solve a real problem you're facing using it. Rust really only starts to make sense for programming in the large. I think JS/Go are much better for simple things

Today I handed in my English drivers license and exchanged it for a German / European führerschein. Next week is my ‘Brexit appointment’ where I get residency. England doesn’t deserve skilled workers!

Being on-call whilst at the gym has taught me to care about being really bloody comprehensive with integration tests.

Being rewarded for working long hours only makes sense if you're doing something well. In fact, if you're bad at your job, the less you do it, the better! You should be rewarded for showing up late and going home early.

Here's my periodic rant about why not to use Jira 🙂: Stories are not tickets. Jira is designed to track bugs. We are developing software, not tracking bugs. Jira encourages the organization to dysfunctionally look at them as such. 1/7

I've been using Jira for the last year and here it is added to my ranking of top project management tools: 1. Trello 2. Piece of paper 3. Word document shared via ftp 4. Shouting to each other over the table 5. Not tracking tasks at all 6. Jira
