Psychologists have known for years that the field’s white, affluent, Western skew distorts our understanding of the human mind, so why haven’t things changed? Michael Schulson investigates:

The End of Work is not imminent: “In healthcare, in childcare, cleaning the environment, in creative work, science, entrepreneurship, the arts — these are all areas where machines can’t hold a candle to humans. We’ve got plenty of work for people to do.”

Possible explanation: People may worry that they might be perceived as ‘monsters’ if they are willing to sacrifice a person's life for the greater good. And this is more costly when one's relationships are not easily replaceable. Consistent with work by and others.

Most notable: societies high in relational mobility (people can develop new social relationships easily) have greater propensity to endorse sacrifice in all variants. Effect is mainly driven by Asia.

However, there were quantitative variations in the endorsement of sacrifice for the greater good, across cultures. Paper's appendix shows different cross-country correlates, such as individualism, religiosity, gross domestic product, and even tolerance to collateral damage in war

Our main finding: In all these countries, participants were most likely to sacrifice in Switch, then in Loop, then in Footbridge. Universality of Switch-Loop-Footbridge suggests differences are best explained by basic cognitive processes, rather than cultural norms.

In our "Moral Machine" platform, we added "classic" mode to collect data on the three most-studied variants of the Trolley Problem: classic "pull the switch", "push the fat man over the footbridge", and the "loop" case designed to eliminate the means vs. side effect confound
