A scene from a kindergarten in Tambov this week on Russia's Defender of the Fatherland Day. Kids were divided into teams "infantry," "pilots," "paratroopers," "sailors," & "border guards." At the end, the children throw pretend-grenades at "enemy tanks." t.me/horizontal_rus

1/ On a cold winter morning, a failing dictator holds a giant rally to whip up support. He collected 100,000 reluctant participants by bussing in workers, students, and government apparatchiks. No, not that dictator, it was Nicolae Ceaușescu in 1989, and he had 4 days to live.

Unfortunately a simple google search would tell us that JWST actually did not "take the very first picture of a planet outside of our own solar system" and this is literally in the ad for Bard so I wouldn't trust it yet twitter.com/Google/status/…

As West is fearful of RU nuclear escalation numerous UA cities, towns and settlements are reduced to ground with conventional means in such a way that makes difficult to say whether conventional or unconventional means were used employed. Hesitation is cart blanche to destroy UA.

In the Moon's great cities there are neon lights and fires, and bright dancing drones painted like rabbits and dragons, and many wonders besides these—medicinal, they fill the sky, so we can't see the Earth at night, and mourn our empty home

I curse every pathetic fucker of a manager who was in the chain of responsibility that keeps an OS this broken a full year after release to miss a school recital of their kid because the fucking clock is stuck. Idiots. Stuff your Azure and JS and AI where the sun doesn’t shine.

Turns out Windows 11 taskbar clock hangs under heavy load and remains stuck until you kill and restart explorer. What the actual flying fuck, Microsoft. Stop spending planetary scale money on LinkedIn, GitHub, Activision, OpenAI and fix bedrock functionality of your main product.

It's not iwrong, but it throws out a lot of context. Historically, AI was an academic research into inventing "intelligence", whatever that might be. Then in 90s(?) funding dried up UNLESS researchers could explain how their idea could be a model of how human intelligence works.

This sounds vaguely related to the observation that an excavator isn't built like a humanoid robot with a shovel, only very fast, and a sewing machine sews quite differently from a human. Also: would this change when we get nearer to the physical limits?

This is a single tweet summary of an (also short, but good) article I came across recently: The Bitter Lesson (incompleteideas.net/IncIdeas/Bitte). Time spent encoding human knowledge is better spent optimizing the computer solution.

There’s an old engineering joke that a Russian screwdriver is a hammer - ‘just hit it harder’. This is what Moore’s Law does to tech - you start out with specialised hand-tuned optimisations, but over time it becomes more efficient just to hit it with more compute.
