*sad story* doctor out here advises parents to force retract...sigh...

The reasons are myriad.
-
This has been my only experience and I know sometimes there are medical and religious reasons. But seeing his tiny penis all raw and weepy and, in his case quite pointlessly mutilated, was really disturbing

-
I think “mutilated” isn’t a fair description. Also “raw”. The exposed tissue is mucous membrane and that’s the color, just like the inside of your cheek.
-
Guess I’m getting a little emotive! It was maybe 2 days post Circumcision & parents brought baby in for me to check “it’s ok”. I’d nothing to compare it with, having never seen one before. Part weepy, part scabby. Frankly it did upset me inside that this baby had been wounded.
-
I completely understand this sentiment and this is a good space for you to share your feelings. Obviously we don't use emotion when discussing this with parents.
-
I’m always caring & professional with all my patients. Those parents had (& still have) no idea about my personal feelings towards their decision. Likewise my non vaccinating parents are treated with care and respect, despite my disagreeing with their views. Twitter’s my outlet

It was around 5% in 2000, mainly Polynesians, Muslims and Jews. http://circumstitions.com/NZ.html
-
Thanks for that information. I knew our rates were low in NZ these days, hence I never see any in the boys or young men at my Practice. Nor was it ever part of any conversation when I had my son early 90s in UK. I was unaware it was still so prevalent in the US, to be honest.
-
And of course if the MGC advocates in the USA are correct, you see a stream of intact boys and men with all sort of foreskin problems - infections, phimoses, paraphimoses, STDs, UTIs, HIV - right?
-
Ummm. No!
-
Yeah exactly & it reminds me of an argument I had with a nurse until she finally acknowledged, well yeah pediatric ward is where you see them, cuz that's where they go & most of the things she encountered were in fact circ complications, virtually none were becuz of being intact.

I wish you could get inside the mind of a male who was circumcised as an infant and as an adult is devestated that it happened. Come on? It’s penile trauma during infancy that ablates an obviously important structure for sexual function and comfort. This is a harmful practice.

There is a relatively new private FB group related to an organization called “Your Whole Baby”. It has 30,000 members and offers unique insight into “regret” parents, upset men, and topics like forced retraction (dozens of posts about this a week)
-
If you want to see how thoughts around this topic are rapidly developing, this is the group to monitor. You will need to request an invite but here is the link - https://m.facebook.com/groups/465967106922660 …

This is a protestor on the streets outside an AAP conference that took place just this afternoon. Think about this...pic.twitter.com/35yyUEnvAZ

Yeah & its not like they do the cleaning up after it exclusively, in my case I did that quite a bit for my small brother, a fact I remind him of EVERY time we argue, I tell him who wiped yr arse, which is enough to shut him up, usually ..

.. -
In fact its real effective as he won't argue with me in front of his friends in case I bring up my role in changing his diapers ..

Yeah that argument is the weirdest of all becuz what else matches, hair, eyes, personality.? Yet conversely that IMMENSELY shallow argument was the ONLY thing that saved me & my brother, my dad isn't circumcised. The decision was that shallow & its terrifying. ..1/
-
But I have a really good relationship with my parents & we are close, but, I know in my case, from what I've learnt abt circumcision if they'd done it to me I would never have forgiven them, NEVER, & we would have had that as a BIG issue, so I think parents should be real careful

and I asked the parents why they chose to.”To look like his Dad”.
WTF?
“To look different from all his friends”, then?
