HUGE thanks to postbebop from Ars Technica, who obtained this copy of SimRefinery from friend who was a retired chemical engineer

If you want to learn more about SimRefinery, check out my recent article about the history of Maxis Business Simulations, the short-lived division of SimCity developer Maxis that made professional simulation gameshttps://obscuritory.com/sim/when-simcity-got-serious/ …

Full written thoughts taking a close look at SimRefinery coming soon. But as the press reports indicated, this was only ever completed as a prototype, and large chunks of the game are unfinished. That actually tells us a lot about it!

Here's my breakdown of SimRefinery. The game is unfinished, and that can tell us a lot about its development. (Featuring a copy of the SimRefinery "Tour Book" manual provided by
@themadstone!) https://obscuritory.com/sim/simrefinery-analysis/ …pic.twitter.com/JoQ9u2Jj6l

The most surprising thing is that SimRefinery is based on SimFarm! Large portions of the interface are re-used. SimRefinery's lead engineer Bruce Skidmore said Maxis provided their code to the Business Simulations team to help them learn how to work with graphics.pic.twitter.com/9eQrAZeaw9

SimRefinery was a prototype that Maxis never finished. Many of the buttons in the game are placeholders. These were intentionally left in to "suggest capabilities the simulation might include" and generate interest from Chevron to continue developing the gamepic.twitter.com/Qxz6CzbJO0

SimRefinery was meant to be played by the office staff at Chevron, but if you don't know chemical engineering, the game is nearly incomprehensible. To play SimRefinery, you'd need an instructor and a copy of the Tour Book manual, which was written for a non-technical audience.pic.twitter.com/RZbyDQ3eM1

SimRefinery is an incomplete prototype, and I think that's really exciting! It shows us what Maxis and Chevron prioritized during development, and it lets us look at an early version of the engine that was later used in SimHealth

I can't think of anything less engaging than an Oil Refinery simulator. Like, I get SimCity, I understand the appeal of building your own city.... but this??

This was never actually meant to be publicly available! It was made for Chevron. For a couple years, Maxis had a division that made Sim games for businesses, and this was one of them. Check out the article for a full explanation!https://obscuritory.com/sim/when-simcity-got-serious/ …
