The headline of the daily beast article said he defended Epstein and that the girls were “entirely willing”. All other shitty behavior aside, neither of those things were true. I believe that’s what’s he referring to.

It's absolutely not splitting hairs - his words are being gleefully misinterpreted. And yes, he's argued that, and it's bad. On the one hand, I recall reading he stepped back on that after further discussion, and on the other hand, that's an irrelevant deflection.
