A thread on banned books⬇️
Currently, When Aidan Became a Brother & Sparkle Boy are two of our most banned books. On an almost daily basis, we receive Google alerts on the controversial content in these picture books, & how they are a danger to the children who read them. (1/?)

At the library, I heard a father tell his son that he could only get a graphic novel if he got two “real books” too.

‘Real books’ aren’t punishments. GNs are not frivolous treats. Let them read what they want, for the love of gods!

I keep saying this, too! If you think a middle school kid pops down to the media center on an industrious hunt for nudies in encyclopedias and sexytimes in novels, then you have not yet met a smartphone or a middle schooler. Kids pop down to the media center to find *themselves*.

Never in human history has it been easier for a teen to find ACTUAL pornography. It's readily available 24/7, free, takes seconds to locate, in every media form. Teens do not go to YA books for porn. They go to books to connect, be entertained, to understand themselves and others

As we hurtle into #BannedBooksWeek I want to say this: The book banning occurring across the USA is not about the books. It's about institutionalizing discrimination against LGBTQ+ and BIPOC people, institutionalizing misogyny through policing sexuality.

Today I heard from a parent that their son was terribly upset when he got covid, because it would ruin his 100% attendance record. At the end of the year, those with 100% get book tokens & certificates in assembly. Here’s why policies like that should stop. 1/

...that will help students learn. Preventing these folks from doing their job is making the world worse--for students and for society. And so yes, it's painful to see LfA banned more and more. But it is more infuriating to see how hard this is making teaching and librarianship.

Follow your library’s social media. And if you see posts being dunked on, speak up. Because sometimes your librarians can’t.

I remember when I played Lord Asriel in 's brilliant His Dark Materials at the National Theatre years ago and an usher told me an audience member couldn't handle the fact that I was black. I asked the usher " Did she mention anything about the talking Polar Bear?"

Someone (not in education) was surprised to hear that teachers have to set up their own classrooms.
She thought we had someone to do that for us and we just walk in the first day and start teaching. I had to explain it takes days of prep + physical labor. And we don’t get paid.

I have made it my mission to unteach children that “fiction is fake.”
Here are my new definitions I started teaching today:

Today's reminder that:
- nothing but a talking stick should be used as a talking stick
- you don't have a spirit animal (unless given one in ceremony)
- don't use "lowest on the totem pole" or "let's have a powwow" casually
- a group of friends/colleagues/etc. is not a tribe.
