Surely at this point in the pandemic we’re best off just remaining in national lockdown until vaccines have rolled out? I can’t be the only one thinking that, right?

You predicted it! To be fair it was the only way, plus Scotland made the first move and we had to respond in kind.
What irks me is how this has been a sentiment shared by so many for so long and yet our leaders take an age to reach the same decision. They phrase it as “working hard” but really they’re just sat waiting and hoping as long as possible before they have no choice.

They try to set up workarounds so when they are caught out, they can use get out clauses. But they can't now as the new lockdown is national. Fingers we can stick to it and get over this! Hope you and the missus are well!
