If the problem is to do with the fact that some symbols that on first glance may look like verification, there are still better designs that fix this problem without removing the check altogether.

Youtube just want to differentiate endorsement and verification, this is their solution. As long as the youtube audience is educated properly and it is forced down the throat of the consumer that the gray box is the new standard, no issues will come from it.

People who deserve and require verification should have it, if they don't get it then that is a fault on youtube's part. Removing the tick won't be a problem at all. This is pretty much as simple as I can put it.
