Ask your supervisor if it's OK to record parts of your meeting. This allows you to concentrate on what is being said. And to check out any confusing bits later. This can be especially useful if English isn't your first language.

Take notes during meetings and send them to your supervisors afterwards. Everybody thinks they have perfect recall but we all leave meetings with different understandings. Reduces confusion. Download a free template from:

That's great. Small amounts of focussed time generally beat many hours of fantasy time. Turn off all the distractions.

Q: How do you know when a is finished? A: A PhD is never finished. There is always more you could do. One more experiment. One more interview. One more chapter. One more reference. One more read through. At some point you just have to hand it in.

Secret 7: You can do it! A is 90% persistence and 10% intelligence. Of course you have to be clever. But that's not enough. You also have to persist. When it gets tough, hang in there. Everyone goes through some tough times. Hang in.

Secret 6: Get help. It's OK to ask for help. In fact, the smart thing to do is to get help. Ask your supervisor. Ask in your department. Ask other students. Use the Library and Support services. Attend workshops (especially ThinkWell ones!)

It works. Golden hours/real hours. One or two hours with no distractions (especially social media).

Doing a is an emotional roller-coaster. Everyone has ups and downs. Don't get too upset when things go wrong. Hang in there.

I'm glad it was helpful. We all need to look after ourselves. Keep up the exercise. And watch out for those Sligo road signs.

One reason people feel is due to fantasy hours. You tell yourself you're working but really not doing much. Real hours are a way to reduce guilt. Real = no distractions, just doing the job. 2 Real hours = 10 Fantasy hours. And less guilt.
