There's seems to be an unspoken rule among the Ivys (and the other bloated unis) that touching the endowment is sacrilege. Why the hell do they hoard all that money if they can't use it when times are tough?
lots of contributions are marked by donors and can't be reassigned to other areas so that's part of it but i'm pretty sure it's mostly because it's treated as an investment that has to only ever grow which is.........??? ok

I heard somewhere that endowments in general can't be used for general fund, only for capital investments and earmarked uses? Which seems pretty dumb, and begs the question "says who"
