this wild for many reasons but mostly bc it reinforces how nothing about the phrase "27 billion dollar endowment" means anything to anyone lolhttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/08/sports/coronavirus-stanford-cuts.html …

This is actually so infuriating- I understand if they’re gonna cut these sports to reallocate funds to helping students... But they’re just gonna plant another palm tree with this or keep hoarding their money

yeah it fuckin sucks idk i’ve always had mixed feelings abt giving scholarships out for rich white kid sports like fhockey/crew but to cut things entirely is wild and nobody really believes them when they say “we don’t have enough money” anyways

There's seems to be an unspoken rule among the Ivys (and the other bloated unis) that touching the endowment is sacrilege. Why the hell do they hoard all that money if they can't use it when times are tough?

lots of contributions are marked by donors and can't be reassigned to other areas so that's part of it but i'm pretty sure it's mostly because it's treated as an investment that has to only ever grow which is.........??? ok

Lol they’re keeping women’s rowing... probably if I had to guess Bc of title 9/women’s rowing usually does better globally (produces Olympians)

no it’s because openweight women’s rowing is ncaa sponsored, men’s and lightweight women’s is not — stanford lw women’s has won like every championship for the last 5 years but they’re not ncaa so they got fucked

Stanford isn't a university, it's a land-trust sitting on the most valuable fucking real estate in the world. Shout out to the rows and rows of RVs in Palo Alto and Menlo Park that line the campus.

What I don’t get is, how does this even save much money? The facilities already exist, the coaches for these smaller sports are cheap, if scholarships are an issue cut the scholarships not the sport?
