tbh it does kinda make sense to me that a lot of university profs get caught up in the Free Speech Debates like......college campus activism has a certain tenor that i also disliked when i was surrounded by it all the time and that i don't find as common outside of school
my theory is that as a student in the face of an enormous & inexorable university system that knows it'll push you out and replace you in 4 years it's basically impossible Not to adopt hardline stances on things in some ways it's an artificially extreme environment
if you're a student and wanna see some really demoralizing shit go to your campus paper archives and search for any issue you want and just look at how many classes before you have done all the same things you're doing. zero cultural continuity for students but admin remembers
I also suspect a lot of it is that people are very young, and have in some cases literally only just been exposed to new ideas about how society is not as great as they were told growing up.
Like when I see someone with a Bad Take who is 18 I am not going to view that as representative of anything, but older people these days seem overly intimidated by young people figuring out their opinions on the world imperfectly
