every time some tech "progress studies" guy is like "remember when we built the railroads and the space shuttle" yeah those were hype projects too but nobody else had anything to talk about......these days everything is so fragmented hype cycles accrue invariably to scammers
imo it's fundamentally untenable to be a "tbt to the great american projects of history" guy while also being a "let idiots do whatever they want/celebrate hype" guy it overlooks the basic evolution of information dynamics that's gotten us where we are today
The internet was built without overall hype. I think the major difference between progress back then and now is that we put innovation into the hands of private corps who only care about the bottom line, vs bored scientists who invent the internet at universities
