it's in the fine print, every new building in san francisco legally has to look like this
-

Affordable housing relies on multiple different sources for funding which makes any uncertainty really bad because it jeopardizes the funding. To mitigate this they try to build the most conservative possible design based on the feedback from the Supervisor and the "community."

This project was criticized from Bernal Heights neighbors who were sad it was "too tall" and got a bad faith CEQA appeal on the grounds that senior housing would lead to "vagrancy and crime." He wanted to delay it a few months https://bernalwood.com/2016/08/25/new-design-unveiled-for-nine-story-housing-at-1296-shotwell/ …https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/news/2017/02/14/affordable-senior-housing-mission-nimby.html …

i used to live on this corner and testified for this project! the earlier versions/designs were different, but they had to change it 500 times to appease the nimbys in Bernal Heights, and eventually just gave up I think

oh i can def imagine this! truly just wish it didn’t have the orange/green color scheme tho i feel like that must be on the designer ???

This is why we need Brutalism to return.

Everyone in San Francisco hated brutalism in the 1960s and 70s. Gave the Mission its most unattractive buildingpic.twitter.com/4FlCBuQPEN

Nearly all new housing in SF looks like this. Building homes is expensive and risky. To stretch dollars the furthest, builders use the cheapest materials. To avoid lengthy fights with neighbors, architects design to be inoffensive.

Building codes and costs play a large role (as they have always). And a good quote: "Looking identical today means neighborhood character. If it’s old and looks the same, it’s good, but if it’s new and all looks the same, it’s bad."https://www.curbed.com/2018/12/4/18125536/real-estate-modern-apartment-architecture …
